The Vatican did not deny the comment but instead said the hell quote can't be considered a "faithful transcript" because the reporter who conducted the interview didn't take notes.
So that sounds like they agree that he said something like this but perhaps not exactly like this. But then he's made other statements in the recent past about Satan and hell, so who knows what he was talking about.
And how does anyone - Pope or arc welder or florist -- really know if something mythical exists or not? You may believe something exists, but that doesn't mean it actually exists.
I honestly don't know if I believe in an afterlife. I guess you would call me agnostic. I like the idea and hope there is a pleasant afterlife, particularly if shared with my husband and family. But I'm far from certain.
I've often wondered if hell is actually a complete lack of an afterlife. Good people go on to some kind of positive afterlife. But evil people simply cease to exist. Your soul is voided and no more.
I think that would certainly be an equitable afterlife.
