Getting on and off the commode at home with a distended abdomen is not easy, thanks in part to the odd design of Australian toilets. In America and most of the world, the toilet is in the bathroom with sink, tub, shower, etc.
But not Down Under. In most homes here, toilets are in small closet-sized rooms all by themselves. And those little closet rooms are not with the rest of the bathroom nor necessarily even anywhere near it.
So when you're eight and half months pregnant and need to get on or off the commode, you have no nearby counter or windowsill or anything to hold on to help yourself up and down. At home, I have to clamp myself with partially distended arms on the two side walls and hoist myself up and down.
One of my husband's brothers has a house with American-style bathrooms. Why that is no one knows, but is a true joy to use the toilets there because I can lever myself up and down on the adjacent vanity counter with so much more ease.
Whoever invented the Australian toilet closet was clearly not a pregnant woman.
