If you were making a list of the greatest prudes in history, surely Anthony Comstock would have to be way up there. He spent most of his adult life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century America doing his utmost to not only remove anything remotely erotic from public view but also to see that anyone connected with such material was prosecuted and ended up in the slammer.
He did for the anti-smut movement what Carrie Nation did for the temperance movement. And not only did he make war on publishers or sellers of anything remotely erotic, he also went after anyone who sold or promoted contraceptives as well as any type of gambling.
